Chronic Pain Management
From over-the-counter and prescription drugs to mind-body techniques to acupuncture, chronic pain can be treated in many ways. However, no single method can guarantee you total pain relief. Rather, a combination of options may help you get rid of the pain. Mild pain may be relieved by over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Although both relieve pain caused by muscle aches and stiffness, only NSAIDs can reduce inflammation. Lotions or creams can also be applied to the skin in order to relieve pain from sore muscles and arthritis. If over-the-counter drugs fail to bring relief, your doctor may prescribe stronger medications like...

Pain Management Without Drugs
THE LEG I DIDN'T HAVE JUST KEPT ON HURTING "I don't know how this works, but it does." Those were the words of Bill twelve weeks after his first visit to Healthy Visions Wellness Center where hypnosis was used to teach Bill how to control his Phantom Limb Pain. Prior to this, Bill was taking pain medicine two to three times a week. Sometimes the pain was so unbearable that he went to the emergency room for intravenous pain medication. On a beautiful fall day fifteen years ago Bill went deer hunting at a favorite spot in the mountains near Huntsville, Tennessee. As he reached the area where he would set up his deer stand he was taken down by a severe deep cramping and burning pain in his...

The Basics of Arthritis Pain
Joints naturally degenerate over time, therefore arthritis is almost unavoidable as the body ages. Most people over the age of 50 will feel the effects of arthritis in some way. A physician is able to tell if the joint pain you feel is arthritis through a series of x-rays and blood tests. Each joint is covered by a protective capsule that contains a slick fluid that helped the joint to move easily. Cartilage is also a part of the joint and is a smooth, slick surface for the joint and fluid to move around. When arthritis happens the cartilage has somehow been diminished and causes pain in movement. Signs of arthritis Arthritis is characterized by pain, tenderness and swelling in the...

Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Pain

Pain is defined as a manifestation of a tissue damage that is brought about by a stimulus. Most multi-cellular organisms, especially animals are found to possess the ability to feel pain or irritation. Some plants are also known to have the ability to retract from certain stimulus. Pain is quite debilitating and only the person suffering realizes the agony involved.

Pain can either be acute or chronic in nature and is classified according to the extent to which it is felt. Short duration, severe spasms are the common characteristics of acute pains, whereas those that are long drawn are usually symptoms of chronic pain. Pain is region specific, depending on the location of the trauma.

Medical experts are of the opinion that the extent of pain indicates the severity of the medical condition. It is recommended that it should be regarded as the fifth vital sign, after the other manifestations of a disease. They also insist in standardizing pain assessment throughout the treatment.

Different pains have varied idiopathic origins. Chronic lower back pain has a more insidious onset and occurs over a long period of time. The various causes of lower back pain include rheumatoid arthritis, degeneration of the discs between the vertebrae or tumors. Back pain may be the result of trauma to the spine, muscles and nerves and may radiate from any portion of the back. The pain is manifested as a tingling or burning sensation, a dull ache or sharp pain. Weakness may also be experienced in the legs or feet.

Modern medicine has made it possible to handle pain in a more rational manner and has also come up with drugs that can dull the otherwise severe pain. The marvels of modern science in the sphere of medicine have greatly contributed to the elimination of pain.

Although both relieve pain caused by muscle aches and stiffness, only NSAIDs can reduce inflammation. Lotions or creams can also be applied to the skin in order to relieve pain from sore muscles and arthritis. If over-the-counter drugs fail to bring relief, your doctor may prescribe stronger medications like muscle relaxants, anti-anxiety drugs, antidepressants, prescription NSAIDs, or a short course of stronger painkillers or steroid injections. Patient-controlled analgesia, in which the patient is able to self-administer a pre-measured dose of pain medicine, is another method often used in hospitals. In the nerve blocking method, a drug is injected around the appropriate nerve to prevent the pain message from reaching the brain. Trigger point injection is a method to treat painful areas of muscle that contain trigger points, or knots of muscle that form when muscles do not relax. When standard medicines and physical therapy are unsuccessful, surgical implants may be required. In intrathecal drug delivery, the surgeon makes a pocket under the skin that can hold a medicine pump. A catheter, inserted by the surgeon, carries pain medicine from the pump to the intrathecal space around the spinal cord. In spinal cord stimulation, low-level electrical signals are transmitted to the spinal cord or to specific nerves, blocking the passage of pain signals. TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve...

A new study shows how to boost the power of pain relief, without drugs
(Medical Xpress) -- Placebos reduce pain by creating an expectation of relief. Distraction—say, doing a puzzle—relieves it by keeping the brain busy. But do they use the same brain processes? Neuromaging suggests they do. When applying a placebo, scientists see activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. That’s the part of the brain that controls high-level cognitive functions like working ...
